How to check a car's price in Denmark, the registration tax refund, documents, technical condition, transport and registration in Poland.
For a Danish car, the largest component of the transaction may be something that is completely absent from the photographs: registration tax. It is therefore not enough to ask for the “export price”. You need to see the calculation, the minimum deduction, the valuation fee and the rule that may exclude a damaged car from the refund.

The advertised Danish price is not automatically the export price
Danish cars are subject to registration tax. When a car is permanently exported, the owner may apply for a partial refund. The official calculation is based on the tax value at the time of export, deducts a percentage and also sets a minimum deduction. A fee is also charged for the export valuation.
For the buyer, the key question is whether the seller is offering the car at the domestic price and keeping the refund, or is quoting a price after the expected refund. A third possibility is risk-sharing, where part of the price remains secured until the export has been completed. Every option must be recorded in writing.
Damage may affect both the car's condition and eligibility for a refund
Danish rules expressly restrict refunds for certain damaged vehicles. This is not merely a tax detail. The seller may have an incentive to describe a car as showing normal wear, while the export assessment or a technician identifies damage with different consequences.
The physical inspection must therefore thoroughly document the bodywork, structural repairs, corrosion, underbody and functional faults. Photographs should be dated and linked to the VIN. The report may then be useful not only for the purchase decision but also for explaining the difference between the advert and the car's actual condition.
Brugtbiltest as a benchmark, not a universal guarantee
Denmark has a developed market for detailed pre-purchase inspections. FDM publishes an extensive brugtbiltest and offers other technical services. The scope of individual inspections varies, so ask whether they include a lift, diagnostics, a road test, brake testing and an EV battery assessment.
For a Polish buyer, it is useful to obtain a report that classifies faults by their safety and financial impact. A list of observations without interpretation will not help determine whether the export price offsets future servicing.
How to document the actual export
The Danish tax authority requires documentation of ownership, sale and actual export. Evidence may include foreign registration, a CMR consignment note, an export declaration or the prescribed confirmation. The vehicle is valued, and the export must be documented within the required period.
The contract should state who will surrender the Danish plates, who will pay for the valuation, and who will provide the Polish registration certificate. Without those terms, a dispute about the refund may begin only weeks after collection.
The landed cost in Poland
The car is not administratively ready simply because it has crossed the Polish border. Customs duty is generally not due on a used car from the EU, but the buyer must deal with Polish excise duty, registration, insurance and, where applicable, a technical inspection or translations. The AKC-US declaration is normally filed within 14 days of the tax liability arising, and the tax is paid within 30 days. An application to register a car imported from an EU Member State must be submitted within 30 days of import.
VAT cannot be determined merely from the fact that the car is described as used in an advert. Under EU rules, a vehicle is new if it has travelled no more than 6,000 km or was supplied within six months of first registration. It is used only when both opposite conditions are met. For a dealer invoice, the VAT scheme applied also matters. The Danish export refund and Polish excise duty are two different taxes in two different jurisdictions. Never combine them into one “taxes” line in the calculation.
A Polish administrative step cannot make up for a missing Danish document. Before paying, therefore, check that the purchase document, foreign registration certificate, any deregistration confirmation and the technical records form an unbroken chain for a single VIN.
When not to trust the export calculation
The refund amount is not supported by a valuation. The seller ignores the mandatory deduction or fee. The car is visibly damaged, but the calculation assumes it is fault-free. The buyer is expected to provide a document from Poland, but the contract does not say when the secured portion of the price will be returned. These are reasons to rework the offer, not merely negotiate over a few hundred euros.
FAQ
Why do cars in Denmark have unusual prices?
Domestic prices are affected by registration tax. An export offer may account for the expected refund.
How much is the tax refund on export?
It depends on the valuation and the current rules. The official mechanism includes a deduction and fee; the specific amount must be obtained for the individual car.
Will a damaged car qualify for a refund?
Some damaged vehicles may be excluded from the refund. The condition must be checked before purchase.
Does CarAudit operate in Denmark?
Denmark is an expansion content market in this collection. Check current service availability before publishing the call to action, and do not promise an inspection unless it has been confirmed.
